My Story

Kassandra J. Liburd
Kassandra Liburd was diagnosed as hard of hearing at just a few months old and grew up without a strong Deaf or Hard of Hearing community. While this led to challenges socially, it also fueled a deep focus on academics, where she consistently excelled. Alongside her studies, Kassandra found joy and self-expression through creativity—exploring art, writing, dance, and other creative outlets.
From a young age, she showed a strong passion for business, often jotting down ideas and imagining future ventures. Now a junior studying behavioral economics at the Harriet Wilkes Honors College at Florida Atlantic University, Kassandra’s interests converged through a social entrepreneurship course, where she took a leap of faith and began building a nonprofit rooted in purpose, access, and impact.
Sign and Shine Community Program was created to ensure DHH children feel normal, and their disability is not the first thing people notice.
Our Vision
"To create a world where Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals thrive, fully integrated and celebrated within society, with equal access to opportunities, resources, and a vibrant community that respects and values their unique contributions."
Our Values
Our values guide how we show up, who we serve, and the impact we strive to create.
Awareness
We are committed to increasing understanding around lived experiences, systemic barriers, and diverse ways of communicating and learning. Awareness is the first step toward empathy, advocacy, and lasting change.
Accessibility
We believe access should never be a barrier. Our work is rooted in creating inclusive spaces, resources, and opportunities that are designed with — not just for — the communities we serve.
Community
Those closest to the challenges are closest to the solutions. We prioritize listening, collaboration, and feedback to ensure our programs reflect real needs and lived experiences.
Connection
We value meaningful human connection and recognize its power to foster belonging, confidence, and growth. Building community is at the heart of our mission, especially for individuals who have historically been isolated or overlooked.
Equity
We strive to challenge inequities by addressing gaps in access, opportunity, and representation. Our work centers fairness, dignity, and respect for all.
Empowerment
We believe in equipping individuals with the tools, confidence, and support they need to advocate for themselves and shape their own futures.
Sustainability
We are building with intention—creating programs and partnerships that are thoughtful, responsible, and designed for long-term impact.
These values guide every decision we make as we grow, partner, and serve our community.
